This website is dedicated to the health of the elderly and to others with chronic illnesses. Only non-invasive, holistic products and methods will be discussed. Useful schedules, procedures, and references will be noted. The purpose of this website is to share information and encouragement with caregivers who want to keep their loved ones in a home setting. I will only be offering information that I use and I know works with my family members. I have been encouraged by friends and medical professionals to tell my mother’s journey back to health. These are personal stories and are not meant to be medical advice (see disclaimer). I will be writing a blog. Each entry will start with a quote. The blog will include timely topics and personal observations. There is also a contact address. I want to give you support and share what I have learned. I also want to send you words of encouragement. There are many resources available. We will learn together how to provide a safe, happy and healthy home for our loved one.
In November of 2013, my belief in looking for the positive was tested. My 92-year-old mother, who had been in excellent health, began an episode in her life, which would change us all and change our approach to health and wellness. We will call her “Grandma” throughout the writings, as that is the title she loves the most. Until November 2013, Grandma had never been hospitalized for an illness or injury. Her blood pressure was perfect and she was on no medications, just supplements. On the morning of November 12, 2013, I went to check on Grandma as I usually did each morning. She lives in a small cottage about 50 feet behind my house. I found Grandma still in bed, and was unable to wake her. We assumed that she had had a stroke. We called for an ambulance and once at the hospital, she was diagnosed with a severe urinary tract infection. The doctors and nurses confirmed that a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) could be very serious in the elderly. The patient is very weak and confused making it look like they had suffered a stroke. After three days in the hospital and on strong antibiotics it was recommended that Grandma go to a local rehab facility to regain her strength and mobility. My initial response was to say NO! I did not want her to go anywhere where she might be infected with something worse than the UTI that she had already. I have now learned always trust your intuition. As it turned out she was sent to the best local rehabilitation center available and we were reassured that she would be fine and would be able to return home in a month or less. To make a very long and painful story short, at the rehab center she was exposed to C. diff (Clostridium difficile) bacteria and with her system weakened by the strong antibiotics, she became infected with C. diff and our long journey began.
